Creative Hour: Architecture and Music explores the relationship between architecture and music through the lens of acoustics — a medium that connects spatial qualities with the ways sound is produced, propagated, and experienced. Through an introductory talk and a musical segment, the program unfolds as a dialogue between space and sound.
In the first part, Marko Slaviček — a composer and architect currently pursuing a PhD in multimedia art in Berlin — presents a concise overview of the role of acoustics in shaping the relationship between architectural space and musical practice. The talk addresses the influence of space on the development of musical styles, the use of architecture for spatialized acoustic and electronic performance, and the understanding of resonance as an active musical parameter.
Through selected examples and references to works by composers such as Antonio Lotti, Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Chowning, Alvin Lucier, and Nicolas Collins, the lecture considers how space operates not merely as a backdrop, but as an active participant in the creation of music.
The second part of the program features a performance segment in which NAE Collective explores the interplay between music and space through selected compositions and sound-based examples. The program includes works that engage acoustic phenomena, feedback, and electronics as means of spatial articulation.
The program includes:
Music Stands — Cathy van Eck (for feedback and music stand)
Kottos — Iannis Xenakis (for solo cello)
Memories of Kowloon — Tomislav Oliver (for bass clarinet, electronics, and video)
The musical segment is performed by Branimir Norac (clarinet), Vid Veljak (cello), and Tomislav Oliver (electronics), members of NAE Collective.
NAE Collective is a group and ensemble of composers, performers, and new media artists founded in 2022. It focuses on experimental music, multimedia, and interdisciplinary formats, with an emphasis on collaboration with local and international artists.
Their performances combine live electronics, sound art, visual projections, animation, and light design, with improvisation as an important element of artistic expression.
The collective includes Tomislav Oliver (composer, live electronics performer, and artistic director of the Music Biennale Zagreb), Vid Veljak (cellist specializing in contemporary music and Porin award winner), Filip Merčep (percussionist and artist working at the intersection of music, technology, and video games), Branimir Norac (clarinetist and multimedia artist), Goran Nježić (video artist and filmmaker), and Boy van Ooijen (electronic musician and video/light designer).
