Federica Zatta
With the support of the Kultura Nova Foundation
The Spatial Practices cycle continues with a two-day event.
The second event in the Spatial Practices series explores the theme of designing with nature, focusing on the relationships between landscape, architecture, and urban development within contemporary ecological and social contexts.
Our guest is Federica Zatta — an Italian architect, landscape designer, and researcher based in Amsterdam. Her work operates at the intersection of landscape architecture, urban design, and architecture. She teaches at several design academies in the Netherlands and is currently affiliated with the Academie van Bouwkunst in Groningen.
She is co-author of the winning proposal for Europan 17 (Breda, NL) and a recipient of support from the Creative Industries Fund NL. Together with Izabela Słodka, she co-founded the multidisciplinary practice Słodka x Zatta, recently shortlisted for the Dutch Prix de Rome Architecture 2026.
LECTURE
In her lecture, Federica Zatta will present the work of Słodka x Zatta — a spatial practice working across landscape and urban design and architecture, critically reflecting on the roles and responsibilities of these disciplines today.
Their work is grounded in the concept of the ecotone — a term borrowed from ecology, describing a transitional zone between different ecosystems. Within this “in-between” condition, they question fixed disciplinary boundaries and open up space for new modes of practice.
Through projects that connect architectural interventions with nature-based local actions, as well as urban development with territorial strategies for productive and climate-adaptive landscapes, their approach shifts the focus from finished objects to open-ended processes. Architecture is understood as part of a broader ecological system — shaped by flows of resources, productive landscapes, and the relationships that contribute to more resilient environments.
WORKSHOP
As part of the programme, Federica will also lead a workshop combining site-specific work and field research. Participants will engage with a selected location through a series of thematic prompts and guided tasks.
By bringing together objective and subjective research perspectives, the workshop will explore the multiple layers — material, social, and ecological — that shape the urban environment. Moving beyond conventional spatial and architectural analysis, it encourages a nuanced reading of the site as a complex and evolving system.
No prior knowledge is required to participate.
